Monday morning a townhouse in the Upper East Side exploded. News reports indicated that it was not an accident, nor a terrorist effort. Apparently the home owner, Dr. Nicholas Bartha, tampered with the gas line and deliberately blew up the historic townhouse in a suicide-revenge attempt related to the bitter divorce from his wife. Before destroying the house, Mr. Bartha sent an email to his lawyers, and others, stating that he would only give up the home "over his dead body."
The irony. Mr. Bartha didn't die. He's in intensive care with burns covering 70% of his body. Should he survive, Dr Bartha will likely face criminal charges as numerous pedestrians and fire fighters were wounded as a result of the explosion. Additionally, the home valued at 10 million, is speculated to be worth more now that it is no longer a "historic" property and can be sold to developers to build a high rise.
