The winner of the 13th annual beautification contest in Brooklyn is the block on MacDonough St. between Lewis and Stuyvesant Aves. This is the second time that the residents of this block have won the contest, the first time was in 2003.
Residents of the block artfully planted and nurtured enough petunias, sunflowers, coleuses, mums, sweet potato vines, morning glories, impatiens and hydrangeas to be named the Greenest Block in Brooklyn.
There are about 225 residents on the Bedford-Stuyvesant block and nearly all of them turned out to participate. Each of them planting, pruning, watering and weeding themselves silly to win the title.
There were about 235 residential and commercial blocks that participated in the contest, approximately 23,500 people.
