NoLita or NoHo has, in more recent years, become a desired residential area for artists, models, actors and children of the wealthy. Located north of Little Italy, hence the acronym, NoLita was once considered part of the Little Italy neighborhood, but in the past decade or so, many of the Italian families have relocated to the other boroughs or the suburbs.
In the latter half of the 1990's, NoLita was besieged by an influx of young urban professionals. Though close to SoHo, but considerably less expensive, retailers have moved to the area as well to provide for the new residents. Trendy bars and expensive boutiques can be found throughout the neighborhood. Yet, many mom and pop stores still remain and offer some of the best bakeries and restaurants that are now thriving after patiently waiting for the area to change.
Residential spaces are small but reasonable in price averaging around $1300. Some, however, do not have their own bathrooms. For a young single person, this is an ideal neighborhood to reside, if you don't mind sharing a bathroom.
NoLita is situated between Houston Street to the north, Broome Street to the south, to the east by Bowery and west by Lafayette Street. St. Patrick's Old Cathedral is located here and is now a local parish after the new Cathedral was built in Midtown.
Anyone looking to move to the NoLita neighborhood would feel welcome right away as it is a small neighborhood and one would never feel lonely.
