On an inlet of Long Island Sound and at the border of Greenwich, Connecticut lies the Village of Port Chester. Incorporated as a village within the Town of Rye in 1868, Port Chester was named after the County of Cheshire, England. Port Chester was originally known as the "Saw Pits" after the deep pits which were dug to saw logs used in shipbuilding. Port Chester's waterfront location offers a bustling downtown area which continues to undergo extensive renovation as part of a long-term revitalization plan. The success of this effort is evident in the attractive and busy shops and restaurants throughout the downtown area.
Port Chester also benefits from its close proximity to public bus service and the Metro North Train Station. From sprawling historic homes to quiet family neighborhoods, Port Chester has always been a great place to live.
Schools
The Port Chester-Rye Union Free School District serves approximately 3,100 students in updated state-of-the-art facilities. There are less than 21 students per class and a full curriculum offering special advanced classes and a variety of cultural enrichment programs. There are four elementary schools, a Magnet School, one middle and one high school. Port Chester High School offers a range of courses on approximately 150 subjects, a work-study program and career internship program. Port Chester's academic, athletic, music and drama programs continually earn praise and recognition throughout the state.
Arts and Recreation
The Council for the Arts, a non-profit organization, sponsors an art series for children including visual and performing arts through after school programs at local elementary schools and recreation centers. The Port Chester Recreation department sponsors a summer camp, a senior citizen¹s art workshop and a special program for the gifted and talented.
The Port Chester Public Library sponsors special programs including art and photography exhibits, lecture series, career seminars, children¹s story hour, and arts and crafts. Nearby SUNY at Purchase offers numerous visual and performing arts programs at The Center for the Arts. Port Chester also sponsors an annual outdoor art show.
