Slamming? Yes, well monologue slams, that is. Every first Monday of the month the Bowery Poetry Club on Bowery just above Houston, hosts the Manhattan Monologue Slam produced by the brothers Philip and Robert Galinzsky. Its a romping good time as the BPC's bar turns into center stage for aspiring and seasoned performers. Here's the idea: returning slam champions from previous months take the stage first to perform three minute monologues before a panel of industry professionals and quasi big-wigs (Spike Lee's casting director frequents the BPC slams...) who judge and critique each performance. After the champion slammers comes the hilarious fun--would-be slammers can sign up at the door to take part in the rapid-fire round of 30 second monologues to be judged by the audience. The audience's favorite then goes on to compete in the next month's champion 3 minute portion. Make no mistake, this isn't some fringe, avant guard and inaccessible affair where everyone stands around in black and discusses how much they love Spaulding Gray (I do love Spaulding Gray). The whole thing is MC?d by the Galinzsky brothers, complete with a DJ spinning and bubbles (yes, Philip has a thing for carrying his bubble machine around as he gets down with his bad self). The whole atmosphere is hip and lively and darn it, just plain fun. So you?re not that into monologues and slamming and bubbles and stuff? Well its just fun anyway to hang out and watch the schmoozing afterwards as the savvy swap business cards and praise.
