CIty of White Plains - Westchester County

Since 1757, White Plains has been the county seat of Westchester. It¹s also the birthplace of New York State as the White Plains Courthouse was the place where the New York Provincial Congress approved the Declaration of Independence on July 11, 1776. When White Plains became a city on January 1, 1916, there were 19,285 people living there. White Plains has grown and evolved into an attractive and thriving cosmopolitan city with more than twenty exceptional family neighborhoods surrounding the downtown area. Today the population of White Plains is approximately 50,000.

The numerous Fortune 500 companies located in Class A corporate buildings throughout the city and the many major department stores contribute to a bustling metropolis and attractively low taxes. The Westchester, a luxury shopping mall features Nordstrom¹s department store and Neiman Marcus plus many other fine retail stores and specialty shops. A sought after location just 22 miles from Manhattan, outstanding schools, excellent government, and a shared sense of community pride among the residents are key to the continuing success of White Plains.

Schools
The White Plains Public Schools have an enrollment of over 6,700 students. There are five elementary schools, two middle schools, and a high school. Class sizes are comparable to the highest quality education districts in Westchester. The residents are actively involved and very proud of the school system which offers a wide range of programs including accelerated courses and special education classes. Both the high school and middle school were recently selected by the U.S. Dept. of Education as national "Schools of Excellence".

Arts and Recreation
White Plains has a very active and extensive recreation department which sponsors numerous activities for all ages throughout the year including baseball, tennis, soccer, summer camps, and ice skating at the Ebersole Ice Skating Rink. There is a YMCA and a YWCA offering a rich variety of programs including swimming, gymnastics, ballet, daycare and summer day camps.

The Fort Hill Players, an excellent local theater repertory company stages several productions a year. White Plains sponsors an annual outdoor art show and the White Plains Public Library offers many interesting programs including art and photography exhibits, special films and discussions, and guest speakers.
